THE FUTURE OF PACKAGING – MOVING BEYOND ONE-USE PLASTICS

20 January 2015

Photo and Blog by Calley O’Neill with love for our Earth.

I have recently finished  GYRE: MOVING BEYOND ONE USE PLASTICS, an interspecies Rama Exhibition painting.  A German Aerospace photograph of the Hawaiian Islands taken from outer space inspired the painting.  Having very carefully freehand drawn the islands as they look above and below from space, I began to paint them.  Slowly and somewhat painstakingly I kept painting and wanting to know what the painting was supposed to be about.  Days and weeks went by and then months and still somehow I was able to remain receptive to what this painting was about.

At the Waimea Ocean Film Festival, I saw and was deeply moved by Angela Sun’s PLASTIC PARADISE, and as disturbing as it was, I knew, the painting was about ocean plastic pollution.

We have got to move beyond using a material, our most notable, durable and versatile 7th Generation Bottlesproduct invention.  So, we created a product that lasts, literally, forever, and designed derivative products such as plastic water and soda bottles, food containers and plastic bags to be used for a few minutes.  That’s where the problem is – the use.  The problem isn’t plastic.  Plastic is amazing!

So, recently I went to Healthways II in Waimea and displayed in the front was this beautiful cardboard laundry detergent by Seventh Generation.  What a wonderful bottle.  Well, I found out it does have a plastic bag inside (#4 so it can be recycled and a plastic cap (#4 so it can be recycled) but it’s beautiful and a big step in the right direction.  The future of personal packaging is peeking out at us and it gives me hope.

Please support this effort and let’s move beyond buying one-use plastics!

Got to tell that to Brown Cow Yogurt!!!  And Liteway Kefir… my favorites!

Love Your Kidneys ~ and They Will Have Your Back!

This is the first in a series of articles about your back health and your overall health.  Knowing our bodies is a big step toward sensitive and effective self-care.  As your kidneys and adrenals profoundly affect your back health, and how you work with and to dissolve stress and tension in your back, let’s begin with your kidneys.  I want to thank my student and new friend, Nicole Friedman for the basic kidney rundown and for inspiring this concise series.

Kidney-functionYour kidneys are two fist sized kidney bean-shaped organs that rest against your back muscles just below your rib cage in the upper abdominal cavity, symmetrically opposite each other on both sides of the spine.  WebMD calls them sophisticated trash collectors.  While generally misunderstood and unappreciated by most people, kidneys are responsible for:

adrenals

  1. Filtering and extracting toxins, excess salts and waste products from your blood to the tune of about 150 quarts of blood every day! Inside your kidneys are about a million nephron filters! The waste and extra water go from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder to be excreted.
  2. adrenals2Balancing body fluids and forming from one to 2 quarts of urine every day. If your water intake decrease the kidneys adjust leaving the water in the body instead of excreting it
  3. Balancing the pH in your body
  4. Producing hormones that help: regulate blood pressure, produce red blood cells, and keep your bones strong
  5. Absorbing minerals and keeping electrolytes in balance
  6. Regulating red blood cells (sending signals to your marrow to produce more oxygen-carrying red blood cells if oxygen levels decrease)

The Full Body Elixir in a Nutshell

SAM_1486

There is so much to THE FULL BODY ELIXIR, that I am inspired to note the different avenues of wisdom and practices from around the world throughout time that are incorporated within the daily practice.

We live in the most wonderful of times when the combined wisdom both ancient and new is available to us from around the world for the first time (aside from the subtle realms).  From the tried and true age old practices of yoga and qigong, meditation and deep breathing, to the broad understanding of the world as energy; from nutrition, green and blue exercise, Earthing, research on stress and its effects, to the great blessing of practicing in Hawai’i on the beach at Anaeho’omalu, The Full Body Elixir is a simple yet dense holistic practice.  To be sure, the best part is that it actually works when practiced daily.  From student feedback I sense it works very well when practiced every other day as well.  Since I practice daily, I can personally only speak to that.  I still love the practice more every day.

Here are The Full Body Elixir’s primary ingredients.

TAKE A MINERAL BATH, Then, Send this to Someone You Love

19 August 19, 2014

By Calley O’Neill

relaxing-bathBAiNEOLOGY: (n) the study of the therapeutic effects of thermal baths and bathing, especially bathing with mineral salts, such as sulfates, sodium, potassium, magnesium, zinc, chloride, silica, etc.

I used to wonder whether the effectiveness of mineral baths to my muscles and joints was simply the placebo effect plus quiet relaxation (which is to say a lot upfront given that placebos are now considered to be as effective at pharmaceuticals, and relaxation is the key ingredient for a healthy body and mind).

breitenbush waters

Breitenbush Waters

I am hugely attracted to mineral hot springs, thus my love affair with Breitenbush and my retreat there every year.  I am not alone.  People, the world over, have been using mineral rich hot springs for ages.  Hot springs are sacred places, valued by indigenous peoples for their healing qualities.  Mineral hot springs have been used since prehistoric times, especially in Europe and Japan.

Roman soldiers soaked in the rich waters of the Dead Sea and in mineral baths to help heal after battles.  While some feel that the words Salas Per Aquam (healing through water) is the root of the acronym SPA, Wikipedia notes the term is derived from the name of the town of Spa, Belgium, a name dating back to Roman times, when it was called Aquae Spadenae.

Interest in therapeutic healing at mineral springs and their surrounding spas peaked in the early 1800’s until the 1940’s.  Today, there is a resurgence of interest and knowledge of bathing’s benefits.

The solids and gases in mineral waters can help reduce stress, aches and pains, headaches, stiffness and inflammation in the joints, helps with arthritis, heal skin, improve sleep, increase blood circulation, treat hypertension and hardening of the arteries, increase skin hydration, mineralization, and restore energy and balance to the endocrine system.

Due to seriously depleted levels of magnesium in our food and water, most people are dangerously deficient in magnesium…about 95% of all North Americans. According to a doctor/nurse/nutritionist team I know in Canada.  Magnesium is the second most abundant element in our bodies, and it helps regulate over 300 enzymes and reactions in the body.

The skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs, filters, and delivers nutrients to the body.  Submerged in a bath, bodily fluids retreat and the mineral water is drawn into the tissues directly where we need it.  Thus, all the benefits of mineral bathing are available if you have a bath tub at home.

Add Epsom Salts, sea salt, local salts from your area, mineral soaks, essential oils, especially lavender, hot water (we have a $30. Filter that filters out the chlorine which makes the water much healthier) and some wonderful skin herbs you can put in your bath.

Dr Teal LavenderMy bath?  Hot water with Epsom Salts, a mineral scrub, sea salt, and Lavender oil.  Add candlelight and quiet, and, sweet dreams and happy healing!

How Urban Design Affects the Health of our People and our Land

by Calley O’Neill

ImageWhat an unexpectedly upbeat TED talk by Mick Cornett, Mayor of Oklahoma City!  What starts out to be a specific talk on a progressive idea for a community to lose a million pounds, turns out to be a brilliant look at how design profoundly, and all too often negatively, affects human health, happiness and well being.

Noting that Oklahoma City, and so many other cities, towns and suburbs are designed for cars, not people, here’s a city that is actually doing a lot about it.  What an inspirational talk –  what great and sound ideas.  Take this one to your city or county counsel and start a design and mind revolution in your town.

This is how we take back our future, work with nature, bring back nature and take back the roads.

This is LOVE – This is YOGA!

This is an extraordinary condensation of that which we call love, that which we call happiness, that which every human being wants more than anything else, and that which we call Yoga, union with our divine nature.

Somehow we love studies.  Well, studies reveal across the board that what people want most in life before they die is to be fulfilled: to feel as if one has made a contribution, a difference, left the world a better place.  We want to feel that our precious time on Earth has been worthwhile, and that we have meant a lot to some.  We want to feel our talents have been honored and well spent, that perhaps our work (our love) in the world has changed a life or two or inspired many.

We want to be like this…. Please watch and spread broadly and like.  These kids will get a computer lab if they get 50,000 views by April 10… send this around the world.  This is life!  And oh how great it is.

UNBLIND MY MIND, an Eye-Opening TED Talk Your Body Wants You to Watch

tedx talk-copy (1)This is a really important TED talk if you want to UNBLIND YOUR MIND, with regard to the food you and your family is eating.  This is a talk about sneaky wording in ingredient lists, and the persistent, sometimes severely damaging effects of MSG, also known as glutamate.  Formerly popularly known as monosodium glutamate, we found out that MSG was unhealthy when we were in high school, long before we ever heard of health foods.

Dr. Katherine Reid’s fifth child had serious and debilitating autistic behaviors as a toddler.  As a biochemist, she set out to find out the root cause.  I am sure you will want to see the powerful positive effects of removing all glutamates from her daughter’s diet, which given names MSG sometimes hides under like ‘natural flavoring’ was no easy task.

Find out if your favorite foods have MSG.  Sometimes you will have to call the company to UNBLIND YOUR MIND and find out what is in the food you are eating and why.

Read these synopses from the MAYO CLINIC.

Potential Health Effects

Common side effects that have been reported related to MSG consumption include severe headache, flushing, sweating, facial tightness, heart palpitations, chest pains, shortness of breath, nausea, muscle weakness; and numbness, tingling or burning in the mouth, around the face and in the limbs, according to MayoClinic.com. Some people report more severe reactions than others, but the existence of cause and effect, as well as that of potentially dangerous dosages, have not been well established.

Possible Explanation

MSG disrupts brain chemicals because it breaks down into glutamate, which is an important chemical messenger in your brain. Too much of any particular neurotransmitter can become an “excitotoxin” and over-excite cells to the point of damage, according to the book “General and Systematic Pathology.” Too much glutamate in the brain leads to various enzymatic cascades that result in neuron death. This may explain why many symptoms reported from MSG consumption are neurological in nature.

Sources of MSG

Many foods found at restaurants, especially buffets and fast-food chains, contain high levels of MSG. Due to negative perception of MSG, many Asian food buffets claim they do not use any MSG. MSG is also commonly added to commercially made stocks and soups, many canned foods, crunchy snack foods and condiments such as barbecue sauce, pasta sauce and salad dressings. Completely avoiding MSG is a challenge.

UNBLIND MY MIND has now become a non-profit organization dedicated to health and well-being.
